administration requesting that St. Croix County be exempt from the administrative decision that the

A ent Perfarmance Evaluations: Mike Perkl, iJWEX Western District Director, will meet with the
committee on April 7 during the regularly scheduled committee meetin to conduct g performance
evaluations of the Agents. The time .frame for the evaluation is the calendar ear of 199?. Y
St. Croix Coun UWEX Marketin Plan: Each tTWEx office is re uired to file a marketin 1 . . , q gpan
wrth UWEX adm~rustrat~on. Extension committee input into the plan was discussed. Committee
directed the .staff to present a first draft of the plan for their reaction at a later date,

4-H Youth Develo meat Re ort
New 4-H Leader orientations and Certification . Reaman has conducted 2 new leader ornentat~ons
and expects 30 new leaders to complete the certification to be a 4-H leader again this year. The
focus of the orientation has been modified to include mare informati on on how to work with youth
to conduct a project meeting that meets their needs, is interactive hands-on and uiformative for
members.
New Curriculum from the MNIwI Extension P artnershi Grant: Reaman ~s ~n the final stages of
completing a new curriculum for 4-H club leaders which .was funded b the ' . y MNIWI Extension
Partnership Grant. The four draft pieces were distributed to committee ' . members Topics Included:
different ways to conduct meetings, parental involvement, handlin confli '
servi g cts and community celsoclal action.

Interview date for 4-H Summer Assistant: Interviews to select t - he 4 H Summer Assistant were
scheduled for Monday, March 23, 1:3o pm at the A Services and Educatio g n Center. Four
candidates have been invited to participate in the interviews, Berenschat D ' t ulI and Jensen will
participate ~r~ the ~ntervtew process.

Hazardous waste Collection: Barney presented an u date an contract '

1998 Recvclin Grant: Barney reported that $111,111.74; So % of the 199 ' 8 Recyclnng Grant, was

made nn the fall along with the final 1997 grant payment, -
St. Croix Coun Fair Rec clip : Barney related on oin efforts to incre ' g g ase recycling at the next
County Fair, It has been determined, following meetin s and discussions w' ' g ith those involved with
fair planning and participation, that enough recyclin containers are made ava' . g liable, but that more
education and public reminders to recycle may be needed. A mailin to 4-H Ci ' well g ubs is planned, as
as careful monitoring of recycling practices at fair time.

Greenman Technologies formerly BFI submitted a bid of $75 per ton, $5 under last ear' y s price.

anke reported that individual small business management counseling sessions are scheduled for
March 16 in Hudson at the Government Center.
The evaluation project for previous counseling sessions is bein conducted b J ' g y anke and Kevin Jones
through a graduate student at UVV-Eau Claire.
The Woodville Village Board asked for Extension help to identify the concerns and riorities of P
village residents for their community. Janke and Larry Swain led two sessions for ublic P
involvement, Priority issues were identified and two task forces are workin on initial ac ' g bons. A
follow-up meeting is scheduled on March 31.
The Retail Committee of the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce is inter ' ested ~n a retail market
analysis to identity opportunities for business expansion or new business develo went. Janke has . P
outlined a protect proposal that Ys under consideration by the committee.
The Glenwood City Chamber of Commerce has requested assistance from Extension to develo pa
strategic plan for community improvement activities. Three sessions have been Tanned. Janke P
thanked committee member Leon Berenschot for his involvement in formin a small steerin . g g
committee to guide this project.
Janke is assisting the Town of Hudson to develop and implement an o inion curve of town P y
residents regarding growth and development.

Milligan expects about 2.0 - 25 dairy producers to be involved in the 1997 D ' airy Farm Business
Summary.
The St. Croix valley Master Gardeners Association is doing their membershi drive. Milli an has P g
helped them form the association the past year.
Over 40 dairy producers attended the PiercelSt. Croix Dai Herd Mana em ry g ent Seminar. Twenty-
four producers completed an evaluation. All reported that the information was useful. The Y
reported learning about use of the MUN test, preserving forages and an new UIP test for fora es . g
Milligan will be having a series of meetings with grazers, a parlor tour, a rou s of dal roducers . g P rY P
considering expanding, and Dairy Farm Business Summary participants.

Lestrud taught 4 lessons to HCE members on how to support outh. She is workin with HCE . Y g on a
statewide grant program which would train several local reading mentors and rovide man books to P Y
children from limited income families in St. Croix County.
Lestrud applied for and received a grant to teach 4-H outh how to sew, A summ n ' . Y er Quilt In a
Day workshop is being planned.
This year's Reading Festival will feature the Ses uicentennial. Local q authors ~HCE members and
others} will read aloud books on Wisconsin themes, and a professional trou e from Madison Kid' . P, s
Karavan, will perform with music, puppets, and storytelling.
Lestrud will be training area Family Living Agents regarding Search Institutes develo mental p youth
asset approach to community programming. She also txained area nutrition educators about calcium
and Osteoporosis.

Mabis presented the "Smart Snacking" display board developed b St, Croix Coun .Two Y tY
additional boards will be duplicated and shared. with Barron and Dunn counties. The dis la will . P Y be
used at senior sites and food samples given. Mabis plans on introducin food bin o activities at the .v g g
senior slt~s, and has keen checking with various groups for prize donations.
Mabis continues to visit the four WIC sites in St, Croix Co ' unty two monthly and two b~-monthly
VIS1tS}.
Mabis reported on the classes held at the jail quarterly. These classes focus on nutrition and
financial management.
Mabis is providing independent living classes four times a ear at the St. Croix Y County Health
Center. One week focuses on financial management and the second week the same rou of tee g p ns
cook a meal.
Mabis has worked with several financial management clients since the move to the new A ricul g Lure
Services and Education Center. Mabis commented on the new facilities providin a rofessional and y
.private atmosphere for her clients,
Mabis reported that Dave Sander of Land Conservation Department rovided venison that coul P d be
shared with clients. Clients have expressed their appreciation for the Venison ro ram. P g
