COUNCIL ON AGING MEETING
October 15,1998

CALL TO ORDER: Chairman, Herb Giese, called the
meeting to order at 9:08 a.m.
ROLL CALL: Members present were Herb Giese,
Andy Germain, Phil Hammer, Rich Peterson, Rhoda
Wood, Larry Weisenburger, Lois Burri, Mary Lou Smith,
John Mortensen, Ann Healy, and Roberta Moe. Also
present were Sandy Gehrmann, Jonna Fedie, Cindy Icard,
Barb Blaisdell, Shirley Marlette, Elma Liberty, ;Gladys
Ellefson, Janice Thompson, Lorraine Jacobs, Bonnie
Brande, Ethel Peterson, Marilyn Vanderpoel, and Peggy
Patterson.
ADOPTION OF AGENDA: A motion was made by
Larry Weisenburger and seconded by Andy Germain to
adopt the agenda; motion carried.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be
Thursday, November 19, 1998 at 9:00 a.m.
ACTION ON PREVIOUS MINUTES: A motion was
made by Andy Germain and seconded by Larry
Weisenburger to approve the September minutes as
printed; motion carried.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Long Term Care Redesign: Sandy reported on the
update presented at Aging Network Training. Redesign
will go to the Legislature next spring. If passed there full
implementation could take place by the end of 2002.
OAA Reauthorization:
On October 8', the President of the U.S. called for a bill
to reauthorize the Older American's Act. Although it has
a huge number of co-signers, it hasn't passed yet. Herb
Giese gave a report on the Finance Budget Hearings.
Sandy noted we will serve 10,000 more meals this year
than we served in 1996. ;
Fundraisers: Faith In Action will be selling ties for
$15.00 and the DayAway Club will sell
Emergency/Travel Candles for $5.00 each.
Clergy Letters: The Department on Aging sent out over
100 letters to the churches in St. Croix County.
Responses has been poor.
NEW BUSINESS:
Elder Abuse Direct Service Grant: Sandy explained
that elder abuse is often perpetrated by the caregiver. This
grant would supplement DayAway and inhome respite. A
motion was made by Larry Weisenburger and seconded by
John Mortensen to apply for an Elder Abuse Grant;
motion carried.
Operations Committee Report: John Mortensen, Lois
Burri, Rich Peterson, and Mary Lou Smith met with
Sandy. Lois gave a report about the meeting. The 50 +
or- Fest was discussed. Possible locations for the event
are still being contacted. Much discussion followed on the
possible involvement of casinos.
Staff Reports:
A quitting smoking brochure from the American Cancer
Society was distributed.
Bill Oemichen will do a presentation on Preventing- Senior
Citizen Rip-offs on Tuesday, October 20 at 1: 30 p.m.
A revised schedule for flu shots was distributed.
The Council decided to continue using Heater Meals for
emergency meals.
The nutrition statistics were discussed. Since funding has
not increased while meals served has increased 18 % in
two years, more donations are needed.
The Hudson Nutrition Site can charge gas for the vehicles
at the Standard Station.
November is Alzheimer's month. Displays will be setup.
Barb will work with Karen Humphrey on Roads for
Recovery Program. The Department on Aging is lacking
drivers and funding to transport people who need cancer
treatments .
Foot Care Clinics are available at the Senior Centers for
$15.00. If participants are interested they can contact
their local senior center and the site supervisor will contact
St. Croix County Home Health to schedule a date.
SITEXENTER REPORTS:
DEER PARK: No representatives present at the time of
reports.
GLENWOOD CITY: Participants are going on a
mystery tour to Red Wing. Martha Mabis did a
presentation. Will have a Guess The Weight Of The
Pumpkin contest. They went out to the Glenwood City
Golf Course. Bingo is going well. The Center Board has
started planning the Holiday Parties.
BALDWIN: They play cards on Mondays and BINGO
on Tuesdays. The Center is gathering information for the
purchase of a computer.
HUDSON: The retirement party for Myrtle Dahm is
today at 1:30 p.m. Martha Mabis is scheduled to do
another presentation. The Fall Picnic will be on Friday at
12:00. Pooh Corner kids are coming next Thursday to
perform.
NEW RICHMOND: AARP members are coming to the
Preventing Senior Citizen Rip-offs presentation for their
meeting. Martha Mabis came to the center.
WovenHearts would like to use the van to take a leaf trip.
RIVER FALLS: The Center had an Ice Cream Social
and bake sale. Footcare clinics are very popular.
SOMERSET: Martha Mabis is scheduled to come.
The Halloween Party is scheduled for October 29'.
WOODVILLE: Participants went on a van trip to the
Shell Lake Carving Museum and went on a leaf trip
yesterday. Bingo and cards are being played.
A motion was made by Roberta Moe and seconded by
John Mortensen to approve all projected van trips out of
County; motion carried.
A motion was made by Rich Peterson and seconded by
Roberta Moe to adjourn the meeting at 12:08 a.m.; motion
carried.
